Satellites guide ships in icy waters through the cloud

In late August, the 60 m-long US Coase Guard Cutter Maple completed its navigation through the Arctic's ice-ridden Northwest Passage. While this was not the first time ships had taken this route, it was the first time that the International Ice Patrol had provided iceberg information based exclusively on satellite imagery. TEPs @ Land Training Course

The "7th Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing" has just concluded and we had the opportunity to join with the participants at the Szent István University, Gödöllő, Hungary.

The course was attended by more than 70 students from both academic and industrial sectors, representing more than 30 different countries. 

During the event a practical class on "Cloud Computing and the ESA Exploitation Platforms" was provided for the students and we had the opportunity to explain the challenges that the TEPs have faced and to give them the opportunity to experiment for themselves with the beta versions of the platforms, currently in pre-operations.

The students expressed interest in the usage of the TEPs for their research objectives and have now been invited to submit proposals to become early adopters and benefit from the expansion of the TEP user community.

The next opportunity to meet the TEP experts will be at the ESA EO Open Science where there will also be the possibility to join "hands on sessions" with each TEP.

Iceberg patrol gains faster updates from orbit

The international iceberg patrol service set up after the sinking of the Titanic is now able to track drifting ice from orbit more swiftly through ESA-backed cloud computing.

The icebergs drifting in transatlantic shipping lines typically break off from the Greenland ice sheet before being carried into Baffin Bay. From there, they typically either become grounded or continue southwards. Most are gradually weathered away, but some can endure dangerously far south.

On 15 April 1912 the most infamous iceberg in history collided with the Titanic just south of the tail of Newfoundland’s Grand Banks. The loss of life was enormous, with more than 1500 passengers and crew perishing.

The PTEP is one of six ‘Thematic Exploitation Platforms’ (TEPs)' being developed by ESA in the frame of the Earth Observation ground segment evolution strategy. The TEPs aim at fostering the exploitation of EO data by providing an online environment for users to access information, ICT resources, and tools.

The TEPs are contributing to the creation of an European EO data ecosystem for research and business, one of the overarching objectives of ESA Earth Observation Envelope Programme.

Polar TEP starts pre-operations

The Polar Thematic Exploitation Platform (P-TEP) has now started the pre-operations phase. During this phase the P-TEP community will investigate current and future iceberg risk in Baffin Bay, Greenland.

A diverse set of data, processors and models will be deployed and integrated to allow users to investigate linkages between iceberg populations, observed and modelled changes in ice sheet movement and calving rates, ocean circulation, and iceberg trajectories. The integration of these components and toolsets will allow P-TEP users to ask questions about changing iceberg populations as part of, for example, climate change studies, infrastructure design, or ship routing decisions.
